Best book recap apps

What app recaps a book up to where I stopped, without spoilers?

If the book is a Kindle ebook, start with Kindle's free Story So Far: it is built in and stops where you stopped. For a paperback, a library book, or an audiobook, Magic Bookmark is the purpose-built option: snap your page or type the last line you heard, and the recap and cast list stop there, on iPhone, for supported titles, paid per book after the first. General chatbots do not know your page and can spoil or invent.

    Magic Bookmark: Book Recaps

    Status: WORTH A LOOK

Snap the page you're on and get a recap and cast list that stop exactly there; built for coming back to a book you dropped.

Band: free first book, then $ per book

    Buy: App Store · magicbookmark.com

    Tags: recaps, characters, audiobooks, print

    Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: Supported titles only, iPhone only, English only, and you pay per book after the first.

Checked against the App Store listing and magicbookmark.com on 2026-11-04, not 30 days of use, so it cannot be stamped KEEP yet. Works alongside your own print book, ebook, or audiobook; audiobook support first appeared in version 1.1 on 2026-10-21. One credit covers one whole book: $4.99 for one, down to $1.40 each in a pack of 50; credits never expire; no subscription. The website also describes a two-week free trial. Rated 4.8 from 25 App Store ratings, a small number. The App Store privacy label lists identifiers used to track you. Full details on our Magic Bookmark page.

    Kindle Recaps: Story So Far

    Status: WORTH A LOOK

A free, spoiler-free recap up to where you stopped, built into Kindle; the easiest restart if the book is already a Kindle ebook.

Band: free with the Kindle book

    Tags: recaps, kindle

    Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: Kindle ebooks only, US only, and thousands of popular fiction titles rather than all of them; no help for paperbacks or audiobooks.

Press and hold a book in your Kindle library and look for Read recap, or open the three-dot menu while reading. Works on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app. Amazon announced Recaps on 2025-04-02.

The catch: Kindle iOS app in the US only so far, and the Authors Guild objects that authors cannot opt their books out.

Launched on the Kindle iOS app in December 2025 for thousands of best-selling English-language ebooks, bought or borrowed; Amazon says Kindle devices and Android come later. You can also choose to ask about the whole book, so check that setting before you ask.

Why a general chatbot is the risky option

A general assistant answers from whatever it learned about the whole book, ending included. It does not know your page unless you tell it, and even then it can blend in later events or describe a scene that never happened. That is how these tools work, not a test we ran. Fine for a book you finished years ago; risky for one you are halfway through.

Privacy and rights, briefly

Magic Bookmark's App Store privacy label lists identifiers used to track you, and photos you upload are linked to your account. Kindle's Ask this Book drew a statement from the Authors Guild because authors cannot opt their books out. Both are worth a minute before you choose.

Two newer recap options, not yet carded

Two big platforms added recaps that stop at your place, and both deserve a mention even though they are not cards yet (cards on this shelf need a listing-based check under our stamp rules first). Google Play Books has Book insights: tap "Catch me up" for an overview of what you have read so far, or highlight a name or phrase and ask about it. Google says it answers only from the text up to your reading position. It launched on 16 June 2026 on Android and the web, reached the iPhone app on 2 September 2026, and now covers more than a million English-language ebooks, including free ones. Spotify has audiobook Recaps: short audio refreshers of the part you have already heard, for select English-language audiobooks. It started as an iOS beta on 13 November 2025 and reached Android on 15 April 2026; publishers can switch it off for their titles. Both are included in what you already pay (Spotify's audiobook listening comes with Premium, $12.99 a month in the US with 15 hours of audiobook listening, checked 2026-11-04).

Which recap matches the copy you own

The honest way to choose is to start from the book in your hand, not from the app. A Kindle ebook: Kindle's Story So Far is already there. A Google Play ebook: Catch me up is already there. A Spotify audiobook: Recaps may already be there for that title. A paperback, a hardback, a library loan, or an audiobook from Libby, Libro.fm or Audible: none of the built-in tools can see it, and that is the gap Magic Bookmark fills on iPhone, for its supported titles, by asking you to snap the page or type the last line you heard. If your copy is in two places at once (an ebook at night, the paperback on the train), a tool that takes a page number from you is the one that keeps up. Our study of 30 reading apps found only one that recaps a print book to your page.

What an ADHD reader should look for in a recap

Three things matter more than polish. First, the stop point: the recap must end exactly where you are, not at the end of the chapter, because the chapter you abandoned halfway is the one you have forgotten. Second, length: a recap you will actually read on a bad focus day is a few short paragraphs, with an option to go deeper. Third, the people: most stalled books stall on names, so a cast list built only from what you have read (Magic Bookmark) or the ability to ask about one highlighted name (Google Play Books, Kindle's Ask this Book) is often worth more than the summary itself. A tool that does all three and still leaks a later twist has failed the one job that matters, so read its own description of how it avoids spoilers.

Cost over a year of reading

Built-in recaps cost nothing extra once you are inside that store: Kindle, Google Play Books and Spotify all include them. Magic Bookmark charges per book instead of per month: the first credit is free in the app, the website also advertises a two-week free trial (unlimited books, no credit card), and after that it is $4.99 for one book, $19.99 for five, $34.99 for ten or $69.99 for fifty, which is $1.40 a book (App Store, checked 2026-11-04). Credits never expire and there is no subscription. If you finish a dozen books a year and only need a recap for the three you stalled on, that is three credits, not twelve. Our price index summary lists the other reading costs side by side.

How we choose

Cards from the reading shelf are listing-based checks dated 2026-10-27: built from official store listings, pricing pages, and support docs, not from 30 days of use, so they carry WORTH A LOOK rather than KEEP. Cards from other shelves keep the stamps they earned there. This list is re-checked quarterly, and stamps follow the desk's published criteria.

Questions

Q. Is there a Kindle Story So Far for paperbacks?
A. Not from Amazon: Story So Far works inside Kindle ebooks. For a paperback, Magic Bookmark recaps up to your page from a photo or the page number, if the title is in its supported catalog.
Q. Can I just ask ChatGPT for a recap?
A. You can, but it does not know your page, can mix in later events, and can invent details. Tell it exactly where you are and treat the answer as a guess. For a book you are halfway through, a page-locked recap is safer.
Q. Does Magic Bookmark work with audiobooks?
A. Yes, since version 1.1.1 on 2026-10-27: enter the last phrase you heard and the recap stops there. It works alongside an audiobook you own, buy, or borrow; it does not contain the book.
Q. Is Magic Bookmark free?
A. The download and the first book are free. After that, one credit covers one whole book: $4.99 for one, $19.99 for 5, $34.99 for 10, or $69.99 for 50. Credits never expire and there is no subscription.
Q. Which books does Magic Bookmark support?
A. A catalog that launched with romance, fantasy, romantasy, YA, sci-fi, and historical fiction, including Fourth Wing, A Court of Thorns and Roses, The Hunger Games, Mistborn, and Dune, with more added over time. You can request a title in the app. Check that your book is there before you spend a credit.
Q. Does Google Play Books have a recap like Kindle's Story So Far?
A. Yes. Book insights in Google Play Books includes "Catch me up", an overview of what you have read so far, and Google says it answers only from the text up to your reading position. It covers more than a million English-language ebooks on Android, iOS and the web (checked 2026-11-04).
Q. Can Spotify recap an audiobook without spoilers?
A. For select English-language audiobooks, yes. Spotify's Recaps are short audio refreshers of the part you have already heard. They launched on iOS in November 2025 and on Android in April 2026, and publishers can turn them off for their titles.
Q. Which recap app works with a paperback?
A. Of the 30 apps in our November 2026 study, only Magic Bookmark recaps a print book up to your page: you snap a photo of the page or type the page number. It runs on iPhone and covers supported titles only.
