Reading and audiobooks

Tools for getting back into a book, keeping the plot in your head, and reading by ear. This shelf opened on 2026-10-27, so every card starts at WORTH A LOOK: KEEP needs 30 days of use.

What are the best reading tools for ADHD?

Start free: Libby for library ebooks and audiobooks, and the Speak Screen feature already on your iPhone for reading by ear. If you keep dropping books halfway, a recap that stops at your page gets you back in: Kindle's Story So Far for Kindle ebooks, Magic Bookmark for print books and audiobooks on iPhone (supported titles only). Everything here is a support, not a treatment.

Recaps and story memory

4 cards

Magic Bookmark: Book Recaps

Status: WORTH A LOOK

Snap the page you're on and get a recap and cast list that stop exactly there; built for coming back to a book you dropped.

Band: free first book, then $ per book

Buy: App Store · magicbookmark.com

Tags: recaps, characters, audiobooks, print

Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: Supported titles only, iPhone only, English only, and you pay per book after the first.

Checked against the App Store listing and magicbookmark.com on 2026-11-04, not 30 days of use, so it cannot be stamped KEEP yet. Works alongside your own print book, ebook, or audiobook; audiobook support first appeared in version 1.1 on 2026-10-21. One credit covers one whole book: $4.99 for one, down to $1.40 each in a pack of 50; credits never expire; no subscription. The website also describes a two-week free trial. Rated 4.8 from 25 App Store ratings, a small number. The App Store privacy label lists identifiers used to track you. Full details on our Magic Bookmark page.

Kindle Recaps: Story So Far

Status: WORTH A LOOK

A free, spoiler-free recap up to where you stopped, built into Kindle; the easiest restart if the book is already a Kindle ebook.

Band: free with the Kindle book

Tags: recaps, kindle

Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: Kindle ebooks only, US only, and thousands of popular fiction titles rather than all of them; no help for paperbacks or audiobooks.

Press and hold a book in your Kindle library and look for Read recap, or open the three-dot menu while reading. Works on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app. Amazon announced Recaps on 2025-04-02.

Kindle Ask this Book

Status: WORTH A LOOK

Highlight a passage, ask who someone is or what just happened, and get an answer limited to where you are in the book.

Band: free with the Kindle book

Tags: recaps, kindle

Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: Kindle iOS app in the US only so far, and the Authors Guild objects that authors cannot opt their books out.

Launched on the Kindle iOS app in December 2025 for thousands of best-selling English-language ebooks, bought or borrowed; Amazon says Kindle devices and Android come later. You can also choose to ask about the whole book, so check that setting before you ask.

General AI chatbots (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude)

Status: WORTH A LOOK

Assistants you may already have can talk through a well-known book, as long as you tell them exactly where you are.

Band: free + sub

Tags: recaps

Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: They do not know your page, can mix in later events, and can invent details; you are trusting them not to spoil.

Described from how these tools work, not from a test we ran. Safer for a book you finished long ago than for one you are halfway through.

Band: free (library card)

Buy: libbyapp.com

Tags: library, audiobooks, ebooks

Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: Your library picks the catalog, popular titles mean hold queues, and a due date can land mid-book.

Made by OverDrive. Apps for phones and tablets, or read and listen in a browser at libbyapp.com.

Libro.fm

Status: WORTH A LOOK

Audiobooks you keep, bought through an independent bookstore you choose; one credit a month, or buy single titles with no membership.

Band: $ sub

Buy: libro.fm

Tags: audiobooks

Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: A monthly charge lands whether you listen or not; pause the membership in quiet months instead of letting credits pile up.

$14.99 a month for one credit. You keep your credits if you pause or cancel.

Audible

Status: WORTH A LOOK

A catalog of over a million titles, a monthly credit you keep, and an included library to sample from before you spend it.

Band: $ sub

Buy: audible.com

Tags: audiobooks

Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: Subscription drift is the ADHD tax here; set a reminder before the free trial ends.

Listening to text

2 cards

Speak Screen (built into iPhone)

Status: WORTH A LOOK

Swipe down with two fingers and your iPhone reads the screen aloud, with a speed control; free text-to-speech you already own.

Band: free

Tags: tts

Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: Built-in voices sound flatter than paid ones, and you have to switch it on once in Accessibility settings.

Turn it on in Settings, Accessibility. Speak Selection reads only the text you highlight.

Added 2026-10-27 · Checked 2026-10-27

Speechify

Status: WORTH A LOOK

Text-to-speech across phone and browser, with far more natural voices than the built-ins; listening instead of re-reading the same line.

Band: free + $$$ sub

Buy: speechify.com

Tags: tts

Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: Premium is $139 a year or $29 a month; the free plan keeps a short list of basic voices.

Read-later

1 card

Instapaper

Status: WORTH A LOOK

Save the article now, read it later in a clean, ad-free view; the tab you were going to keep open forever goes here instead.

Band: free + $ sub

Buy: instapaper.com

Tags: read-later

Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: A saved list becomes its own guilt pile; archive in bulk once a month. Text-to-speech playlists sit behind Premium.

Premium is $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Mozilla closed Pocket in July 2025, so older read-later guides point at an app that no longer exists.

1 card

The StoryGraph

Status: WORTH A LOOK

Logs books and progress, with reading goals and buddy reads where comments stay locked until each reader reaches that point.

Band: free + $ sub

Buy: thestorygraph.com

Tags: reading-log

Confidence: Listing-based check (desk review)

The catch: Tracking is not remembering: it logs your page but will not tell you what happened on it.

Plus is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year; the free tier covers tracking, goals, and buddy reads.

Questions

Q. Why is nothing on this shelf stamped KEEP?
A. KEEP means still in use after 30 days or more. This shelf opened on 2026-10-27 and its cards are listing-based checks, built from official store listings, pricing pages, and support docs, so every card starts at WORTH A LOOK. Stamps move at the first re-check.
Q. Do reading apps help with ADHD?
A. They lower the cost of a task: finding a book, hearing it instead of reading it, or remembering what happened. That is support, not treatment. Diagnosis and treatment belong with a clinician; see our medical disclaimer.
Q. What is the cheapest reading setup?
A. A library card plus Libby, and Speak Screen on your phone. Both are free. Pay for an audiobook membership only after a month of actually finishing library loans.
Q. How do I get back into a book I stopped halfway?
A. Get a recap that stops at your page, not a summary of the whole book. Kindle readers have Story So Far built in; for print books and audiobooks on iPhone, Magic Bookmark does this for its supported titles. Then set a short timer and read ten pages before deciding anything.
