The options split two ways. Drop-in rooms, like the big Discord study servers, are free and always open but chaotic. Booked sessions, like Focusmate, give you a set time with one person, which is what makes people show up; the free tier is limited, so check whether three sessions a week covers you. Facilitated memberships such as Flown and Caveday add structure and a guide at a membership price.
Book a session at the time of day you usually lose, not the time you are already productive. Say the first physical step out loud at the start. Judge it over two weeks, not one hour. Our body doubling guide explains the kinds, and our note on Focusmate's free plan covers the limits.
You need someone expecting you before you will start: Focusmate, booked a day ahead. You like a host, a structure and a calm, produced feel: Flown. You want the most ritual, with phones away and a guided start and finish: Caveday, after checking session times against your time zone. You want free company with no booking: Study Together's Discord rooms. You find video exhausting: a cameras-off Discord room, or a friend working in the same room once a week.
Body doubling means doing a task with another person present, in the room or on a video call, who is usually doing their own work. Many ADHD adults find that the presence of someone else makes it easier to start and keep going on tasks they would otherwise avoid. Nobody is supervising you; the other person's presence and a set start time do the work. It can be as simple as a friend at your kitchen table or as structured as a booked video session with a stranger. The services on this list are ways to get that presence on demand, with different amounts of structure and cost.
Booked one-to-one sessions, like Focusmate, pair you with one person for a fixed slot: you each say your goal, work with cameras on, and check in at the end. Facilitated group sessions, like Flown and Caveday, add a host who opens and closes the session and keeps time. Drop-in rooms, like the big Discord study servers, are always open and free, with people coming and going. In-person options, such as a library, a cafe with a friend, or a coworking day, need no app at all. The booked formats give the strongest commitment, because someone is expecting you. Drop-in rooms give the most flexibility. Choose based on whether your problem is starting at all or staying with it once started.
Formats differ in how visible you are. Focusmate sessions are cameras-on video with a short spoken check-in. Facilitated groups usually have a host on video and may ask you to share your goal in chat or out loud. Discord rooms often allow camera off and no talking, which suits people who find video tiring. If cameras make you anxious, start with a cameras-off room and move to booked sessions once the habit exists. Use a plain background or blur, and keep a sticky note with your first step next to the screen so the check-in is quick. Comfort matters, because a format you dread will not survive two weeks.
Focusmate's free plan included three sessions a week when we checked on 2026-10-27, with Plus at $8 a month billed yearly or $12 monthly for unlimited sessions; our Focusmate note covers how to tell whether three is enough. Flown and Caveday are priced as memberships, so check their current plans and trial terms before you commit. Discord study rooms are free. A sensible order is free first, then a paid membership only after two or three weeks in which you used the free option on purpose and wanted more of it.
Book the session at the time of day you usually lose, not the time you are already productive. Before it starts, write the first physical step on a sticky note: "open the tax spreadsheet and fill in row 4", not "do taxes". At the start, say the goal out loud or type it. Put the phone face down across the room. Work until the end, even if the task is done early; start the next small task. At the end, say what moved. Keep a one-line log after each session. After two weeks, the log tells you whether body doubling helps you, which format works, and whether paying for more would change anything. Our body doubling guide covers the types in more depth.
You do not need a service to try body doubling. Ask a friend, partner or colleague to work alongside you for an hour, each on your own task; agree a start time and say your goals at the beginning. Libraries and cafes give you strangers as company for free. Some people use a long video of someone else studying as background, which suits those who dislike being seen. These options cost nothing and are a good way to find out whether the method helps before paying for a membership. If it clearly helps but the free options are unreliable, that is when a booked service earns its place.
Booking sessions at times you are already productive, so they add little. Arriving without a specific first step. Judging the method after one awkward session. Paying for a membership before using a free option on purpose for two weeks. And using sessions only for easy tasks; the value is highest on the task you have been avoiding.
Stamps are earned per the desk's criteria: KEEP means still in use after 30 days or more, WORTH A LOOK means real merit with a situational fit. This list is re-checked quarterly and the table above carries the date. Stamps follow the desk's published criteria, and the returned entry explains itself.
