Audible credits expire. Set the reminder now.

Do Audible credits expire?

Yes. Audible's plans page says Premium Plus credits expire 12 months after they are issued, or when the membership is cancelled. Audiobooks you already bought with credits or cash stay yours after you cancel. So spend credits before you cancel, and set a calendar reminder before the free trial ends.

What exactly expires?

We checked Audible's membership plans page on 2026-10-27. For Premium Plus members, each month adds one audiobook credit, and every audiobook costs one credit regardless of its length or list price. Audiobooks you buy with a credit are yours to keep. The page also says, plainly, that credits expire 12 months after they are issued or when membership is cancelled, and points to a help article on credits for details.

When you cancel, any audiobooks you purchased with cash or credits stay in your library. What you lose is access to titles from the Plus Catalog, and any unspent credits.

Why this is the ADHD tax in audiobook form

Our Audible card on the reading shelf has one catch line: subscription drift. A monthly charge is easy to forget; a credit that expires in a year is easy to forget too. The combination means you can pay every month, bank credits for the long weekend you will definitely listen, and lose them anyway.

That is not a reason to avoid Audible. Its catalog is large, the monthly credit is yours to keep once spent, and the 30-day free trial is a fair way to test whether you listen at all. It is a reason to put two reminders in your calendar today.

The two reminders

  • Day 25 of the free trial: decide whether you are listening. If not, cancel before day 30.
  • Every three months: open your account, count your credits, and spend any that are older than nine months.
  • Before you cancel: spend every credit first, because unspent credits disappear on cancellation.

What about Libro.fm?

Libro.fm works differently. It costs $14.99 a month for one credit plus 30% off individual audiobooks, you choose an independent bookstore that gets a share of your purchases, and you can download DRM-free files. Our Libro.fm card notes that you keep your credits if you pause or cancel, and suggests pausing in quiet months rather than letting credits pile up. The full comparison is in Libro.fm or Audible for ADHD listeners.

And before paying anyone, try the free route: Libby with a library card. Our Libby guide walks through the settings.

How to find all your other forgotten subscriptions

If you bought Audible through the App Store, it shows up in your iPhone's subscription list along with everything else you pay for. Our subscription audit checklist covers iPhone, Android and card statements in one sitting.

What a lost credit actually costs

On the $14.95 Premium Plus plan, each credit costs you roughly $14.95. Lose four credits in a year to expiry or a rushed cancellation and you have paid about $60 for nothing. That is the case for a quarterly check: it takes five minutes, and it either turns credits into books or tells you to pause the plan.

If you notice you are banking credits month after month, that is useful information too. It usually means the plan is bigger than your listening, and a cheaper plan, a pause, or the library is the better fit.
