What is body doubling?
What is body doubling for ADHD?
Body doubling means doing a task with another person present, in the room or on video, so that starting and staying on task gets easier. Many ADHD adults use it for work they avoid alone. It comes in four kinds: a friend nearby, booked one-to-one video sessions like Focusmate, open rooms like Study Together, and facilitated groups like Flown or Caveday.

What it is, and what it is not
The idea is old and simple: some tasks are easier with someone else there. The other person does not help with the task. They are just present, working on their own thing, and their presence makes it easier to begin and harder to drift off to the fridge or the phone.
Body doubling is a strategy people use, not a treatment. We are not going to tell you why it works, because the honest answer is that people describe different reasons: accountability, a social cue to stay put, a fixed start time, or simply company. What matters for you is whether it works for the task in front of you, and that is cheap to test.
The four kinds
| Kind | Example | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| In person | A friend, partner or coworker in the room | Free | Chores, paperwork, anything at home |
| Booked one-to-one video | Focusmate | 3 free sessions a week; Plus $8/mo yearly or $12/mo | Dreaded tasks that need a fixed start time |
| Open rooms | Study Together (Discord) | Free | Ambient company without booking |
| Facilitated groups | Flown, Caveday | Membership pricing | People who want a host and a ritual |
How to pick the right kind
Start with the task, not the tool. If the problem is starting at all, you want a fixed appointment: booked one-to-one sessions give you a time, a person who is expecting you, and a moment where you say out loud what you will do. That is Focusmate's model, and it is a KEEP card on our communities shelf.
If the problem is staying put once you have started, open rooms can be enough. Study Together runs large, always-on rooms; the catch on our card is big-server chaos, so mute channels aggressively. If you like structure and do not mind paying, Flown and Caveday run hosted sessions with a clear opening and close; Caveday's catch is fixed session times, so check your time zone before subscribing.
How to run your first session
- Pick one task you have avoided for at least a week.
- Write the first physical step on paper: "open the tax folder", not "do taxes".
- Book or join a session and say the task out loud at the start.
- Put the phone face down across the room and start a visual timer; see how to choose a visual timer.
- At the end, say what moved. Then book the next one before you close the tab.
Body doubling for reading
Reading a book is a classic body doubling task: easy to put off, easy to drift from. A shared reading session with a friend, a library quiet room, or a booked video session with "read 20 pages" as the stated task can all work. Our tools to finish a book shortlist includes Focusmate and Study Together for this reason.
When it does not help
Some people find being watched distracting, or video sessions draining. If two or three honest tries leave you more tired than productive, stop. Try in-person company without talking, or a timer alone. Nothing here is medical advice; if focus problems are affecting your life, a clinician is the right next step. See our medical disclaimer.
