Guide
How to choose a visual timer
What kind of visual timer works best for ADHD?
One you can see from where you work without picking up your phone. A Time Timer shows remaining time as a shrinking red disk you can read across a room; a flip cube starts a 5, 15, 30 or 60 minute sprint by turning it over; a sand hourglass is silent and needs no batteries. Avoid using your phone as the timer: the screen that eats your time is the wrong place to watch it.

Why a visual timer and not a clock?
A clock tells you what time it is. A visual timer shows how much time is left, as a shape that shrinks. For many people who lose track of time, that is the difference between "I have plenty of time" and seeing a red slice that is clearly getting thin. Our KEEP card for the Time Timer puts it this way: time made visible from across the room; the shrinking red disk is the whole product.
It is a tool, not a treatment. If time slipping away is a big problem in your life, it is worth talking to a clinician; see our medical disclaimer.
The five timers on our shelf
| Timer | Stamp | How you start it | Best for | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Time Timer Original 8" | KEEP | Turn the red disk to the minutes you want (up to 60) | Desks, kitchens, kids' rooms; reading from across a room | Older units tick; the current generation is quiet |
| Time Timer MOD | KEEP | Same disk, smaller body with a cover | Bags, desks, travel; silenceable | Too small to read across a room |
| Flip cube timer | WORTH A LOOK | Flip to the face you want: 5, 15, 30 or 60 | The fastest sprint start that exists | Presets only; quality varies, buy on return policy |
| Ticktime hexagon | WORTH A LOOK | Flip, plus a custom mode and display | People who outgrow presets | More modes, more fiddling |
| Sand hourglass set | WORTH A LOOK | Turn it over | Silent, unplugged, calming | No alarm; pair with noise |
How to choose in three questions
- Where will you look at it? Across a room means a large face like the Time Timer Original 8". On the desk in front of you, the MOD or a flip cube is enough.
- How do you start tasks? If deciding how long is itself a hurdle, a flip cube's fixed faces remove the decision. If you need odd durations, the Time Timer's disk or the Ticktime's custom mode.
- What does sound do to you? If ticking or beeping is distracting, check that you are getting the current quiet Time Timer, or use an hourglass and accept no alarm.
Why the phone timer was returned
Phone timer apps are a RETURNED card on our shelf, with the reason: the phone is the hazard. Every time you check how long is left, you are one tap from a notification, a feed, or a message. A timer on the desk is a separate object with one job. That separation is the point.
If you must use a phone timer, put the phone across the room face up so you can see the screen without touching it. It is a workaround, not the fix.
Ways to use one tomorrow
- Sprints: 15 minutes of the dreaded task, then stop if you want to. You often will not want to.
- Transitions: set 10 minutes before you need to leave so the leaving starts on time.
- Reading: 20 minutes of reading with the timer in view, then decide whether to keep going. See tools to finish a book.
- Body doubling: start the timer when your session starts; see what is body doubling.
Where to go next
Our visual timers shortlist ranks these in order, and the desk timers shortlist covers pomodoro-style options. The flip cube is also our cheapest safe gift; it is in the under $20 drawer of the gift guide.

Questions
- Q. What is a visual timer?
- A. A timer that shows remaining time as a shape you can see, such as a shrinking colored disk, rather than only as numbers.
- Q. How long does a Time Timer Original 8 count down?
- A. Up to 60 minutes, shown as a red disk under a clear lens.
- Q. Is a flip timer good for ADHD?
- A. Many people like it because flipping to a preset face removes the decision about how long to work. Presets are fixed at 5, 15, 30 and 60 minutes on the common models.
- Q. Why not just use my phone?
- A. Because checking the timer puts you one tap from everything else on the phone. A separate object avoids that.
