Who gets Kindle's Story So Far?
Who can use Kindle Story So Far?
Readers in the US with a supported Kindle ebook, on a Kindle device or the Kindle iOS app. It covers thousands of popular fiction titles, not every book. Paperback readers, audiobook listeners outside Kindle, and readers outside the US are left out; for print and audio on iPhone, Magic Bookmark does a similar job for its supported titles, paid per book.

What is Story So Far?
Story So Far is part of Kindle Recaps, which Amazon announced on 2 April 2025. Recaps started as "Previously on" style refreshers for books you have already read in a series. Story So Far is the in-book version: a spoiler-free recap up to where you stopped reading in the current book.
On our reading shelf it carries the note: press and hold a book in your Kindle library and look for Read recap, or open the three-dot menu while reading.
Who is included?
If all four are true, this is the easiest restart for a dropped book on the market. It is free, it is already on your device, and it knows exactly where you stopped because the reading position lives in the same app.
- Readers in the US.
- On a Kindle device or the Kindle app for iOS.
- Reading a Kindle ebook that Amazon has enabled. Amazon describes coverage as thousands of popular fiction titles.
- At no extra cost: it comes with the Kindle book.
Who is left out?
Everyone whose book is not a Kindle ebook. That includes paperbacks and hardcovers, library print loans, audiobooks in Audible, Libro.fm or Libby, and ebooks bought from other stores. It also leaves out readers outside the US and titles Amazon has not enabled, which is most of the long tail of books.
For ADHD readers this gap is real, because a lot of re-entry happens with physical books: the paperback on the nightstand with a receipt marking page 140 from three months ago.
What do print and audiobook readers use instead?
Magic Bookmark is the purpose-built alternative: snap a photo of the page you are on, type the page number, or for an audiobook enter the last phrase you heard, and you get a recap and cast list that stop there. It works with your own print, ebook or audio copy, but only for titles in its catalog, only on iPhone, and after the first free book it costs $1.40 to $4.99 per book depending on the pack. Our book recap apps shortlist compares both, plus general chatbots.
General AI chatbots can talk through a well-known book, but they do not know your page, can mix in later events, and can invent details. If you use one, tell it exactly where you are and treat the answer as a guess.
A low-tech fallback that always works
When no tool covers your book, a paper cast list costs nothing: one line per character, written as you meet them. Our printable cast list is built for exactly this, and it doubles as the thing you read first when you come back.
How to check whether your book is covered
Open the Kindle ebook on a Kindle device or the Kindle iOS app, then look for Read recap on the book in your library or in the three-dot menu while reading. If the option is missing, the title is not covered today. For Magic Bookmark, search the title inside the app before buying a credit; you can request a missing title there.
