Kindle Ask this Book, explained

What is Kindle Ask this Book?

Ask this Book is an AI feature in the Kindle iOS app that answers questions about the ebook you are reading, such as who a character is or what just happened, without spoiling what comes after your place. It launched in the US in December 2025 for thousands of best-selling English-language Kindle ebooks, bought or borrowed. The Authors Guild objects that authors cannot opt their books out.

Where does Ask this Book work?

Ask this Book launched on the Kindle app for iOS in the US in December 2025, according to Good e-Reader's report from 14 December 2025. Amazon said it would expand to Kindle devices and the Android app. It covers thousands of best-selling English-language Kindle ebooks, whether you bought them or borrowed them.

It is part of the same family as Kindle Recaps, which Amazon announced on 2 April 2025, and Story So Far, which gives you a spoiler-free recap up to where you stopped. Amazon's own page describing all three was updated in July 2026.

What can you ask it?

The pitch is simple: highlight a passage or open the feature while reading, and ask a question about the plot, the characters, or the themes. The answer is limited to where you are in the book. For a reader who loses track of names, that is the useful part: "who is this again?" gets an answer that does not reveal the next chapter.

One setting to check before you ask: you can also choose to ask about the whole book. That is handy for a reread and a spoiler trap for a first read. Our card for Ask this Book carries that warning.

What can it not do?

It only works inside Kindle ebooks. If you are reading a paperback, a library hardcover, or listening to an audiobook outside Kindle, Ask this Book has nothing to work with. That is the honest dividing line between Amazon's tools and the alternatives on our book recap apps shortlist: Kindle's tools are free with the Kindle book; tools that work with print or audio, like Magic Bookmark, cover fewer titles and charge per book.

It also only works in the US for now, on iOS first, and only for the titles Amazon has enabled. If your book is older, niche, or not in English, assume it is not covered until you see the option.

Why are authors objecting?

The Authors Guild published a statement raising concerns about Ask this Book. The central objection is that authors cannot opt their books out of the feature. The Guild's statement is linked in the sources below; read it in full rather than relying on a summary, including ours.

For readers, the practical takeaway is not a verdict on the dispute. It is that features like this can change: titles can be added, removed, or handled differently as publishers and authors push back. Check the feature on your own book rather than trusting a list.

Should an ADHD reader use it?

If your books are Kindle ebooks and you are in the US on an iPhone, it is free and already there, so try it the next time you lose track of who someone is. The risk is the same as with any AI answer: it can be wrong, and you are trusting it not to spoil. Stay on the "up to my place" setting.

If your reading is mostly print or audio, the tool will not reach your books. Our reading tools format matrix shows which tools work with which formats.
