Magic Bookmark now recaps audiobooks
Can Magic Bookmark recap an audiobook?
Yes, since version 1.1, released on 2026-10-21; version 1.1.1 on 2026-10-27 repeats the release note. You type the last phrase you heard, and the app syncs to that point and gives you a recap, a cast list, and spoiler-free answers that stop there. It works only for the titles in its catalog, only on iPhone, and the first book is free before per-book credits start.

What changed in late October 2026?
Audiobook support first appears in the App Store release notes for version 1.1 on 21 October 2026, and version 1.1.1 on 27 October repeats it: "Now with audiobook support: get spoiler-free recaps for any book format." Before this update, Magic Bookmark worked from a photo of the printed page you were on, or a page number you typed. Audiobooks have no page to photograph, so the new flow asks for the last phrase you remember hearing instead.
That one change matters more than it sounds for listeners. With an audiobook, the moment you lose the thread is often invisible: you were driving, the dishwasher beeped, and twenty minutes went by without anything landing. Scrubbing back by guesswork is slow, and a full-book summary would spoil what comes next. A recap that stops at the line you last heard is the missing tool.
The flow for finishing a book and moving to the next one arrived earlier, in version 1.0.10 on 19 October. Apple's catalog dates version 1.0 to 18 August 2026, and the US App Store version history starts with 1.0.1 on 20 August, so this is a young app that is shipping often.
How does it work with an audiobook?
Magic Bookmark does not contain the book and does not play audio. It works alongside your own copy, whether that is an Audible title, a Libro.fm download, or a library loan in Libby. You listen in your usual app; when you need to catch up, you open Magic Bookmark, pick the book, and enter the last phrase you heard.
From there you get the same four things print readers get: a recap that stops exactly at your place, a cast list built only from what you have heard so far (new characters appear only after you meet them), answers to questions about the story so far, and a chat where you can type @ to talk to a character who only knows the story up to your point.
- Open your audiobook app and note the last sentence you clearly remember.
- In Magic Bookmark, choose the title and type that phrase.
- Read the recap, check the cast list if names have blurred, then press play again.
- If the phrase was too vague, try a more distinctive line from a few minutes earlier.
What does it cost?
The download is free and the first Bookmark Credit is free. One credit covers one whole book, not one session: the bookmark moves with you through that book. After the free one, credits cost $4.99 for one, $19.99 for five ($4.00 each), $34.99 for ten ($3.50 each), or $69.99 for fifty ($1.40 each). Credits never expire and there is no subscription.
For a listener who mostly borrows from the library, that pricing is the main thing to weigh. Libby itself is free; adding a recap to a free loan costs a credit. For a long series you plan to finish, a pack brings the per-book price down. Our price index for the reading shelf lists every tool on the shelf side by side.
What are the limits?
Supported titles only. The catalog launched with the romance, fantasy, romantasy, YA, sci-fi and historical fiction titles that are popular on BookTok and Bookstagram, and you can request a title in the app. Check that your book is listed before you spend a credit.
iPhone only today, requiring iOS 16.4 or later; Android is on the roadmap but not available. English only. The App Store privacy label lists identifiers used to track you, and lists purchases, contact info, photos, search history, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics as data linked to you. It is rated 4.8 out of 5 from 25 ratings on the US App Store as of 2026-11-04, which is a small number of ratings.
Our card for it is stamped WORTH A LOOK, with the confidence line "Listing-based check (desk review)": it was checked against the App Store listing and magicbookmark.com on 2026-10-27, not lived with for 30 days. See how stamps work.
Who is this useful for?
If you listen while doing something else and regularly lose the plot, this closes a real gap. If your audiobooks are Kindle-linked ebooks with narration, Amazon's free Story So Far may already cover you; read who gets Story So Far. If you only listen to podcasts and nonfiction, a recap app is the wrong tool; chapter titles and a sleep timer do more. Our audiobook setup shortlist covers the rest of the kit.
