Glossary

What do the words on an ADHD Bookmark card mean?

Every card has a stamp (KEEP, WORTH A LOOK or RETURNED), a price band in dollar signs, a confidence line saying how much testing it got, and two dates. This glossary defines those, plus the reading-tool terms used across the reading shelf, such as page-locked recap, cast list, Bookmark Credit and text-to-speech.

Stamps

KEEP
Still in use after 30 days or more, or so consistently kept by people we trust that it earns the stamp, with the confidence line saying which. A minority stamp on purpose. A listing-based card never carries KEEP.
WORTH A LOOK
Real merit with a situational fit. The why-line tells you the situation. Every card on the reading shelf started here because the shelf opened on 2026-10-27.
RETURNED
Tried and retired. The reason stays published on the card in six words or fewer, and purchase links come off the day it is stamped.

Card parts

Why-line
The one sentence under the title that says what the thing is for and why it earned a place.
The catch
The honest downside, in one line. Every tool has one.
Price band
Dollar signs instead of a price, because prices move: $ is cheap, $$ moderate, $$$ expensive, $$$$ a serious purchase. "sub" means a subscription; "free + sub" means a free tier with a paid plan.
Confidence line
How much testing a card got: Owned and used (we live with it), Tested briefly (weeks, not months), Community-sourced (n=number of reports), or Listing-based check (built from the official listing, pricing page and support docs on the date shown, with no hands-on time claimed).
Added and Checked dates
When the card entered the catalog and when it was last checked. Older cards show a month (2026-08); reading shelf cards show a day (2026-10-27).
Shelf and drawer
A shelf is a life area (gear, home, planners, reading). A drawer is a group of cards within a shelf, such as Recaps and story memory.
Shortlist
A ranked page answering one question, built only from cards already on a shelf, with their stamps unchanged.
A placement on the page, not a stamp. It does not change any card's stamp, confidence line, note or position in a shortlist.

Reading-tool terms

Page-locked recap
A summary of a book that stops exactly at the page or point you have reached, so it cannot spoil what comes next. Kindle's Story So Far and Magic Bookmark both work this way, for different formats.
Spoiler-free answer
An answer to a question about a book that only uses what happens up to your place. Kindle Ask this Book and Magic Bookmark offer this; general chatbots cannot guarantee it because they do not know your page.
Cast list
A list of characters and how they connect. In Magic Bookmark it is built only from what you have read, so new characters appear only once you have met them. You can also keep one on paper; see our printable cast list.
Bookmark Credit
Magic Bookmark's unit of payment. One credit covers one whole book; credits never expire. The first is free; after that $4.99 for one down to $1.40 each in a pack of 50.
Kindle Recaps
Amazon's "Previously on" style refreshers for earlier books in a series, announced 2 April 2025.
Story So Far
Part of Kindle Recaps: a spoiler-free recap of the current Kindle ebook up to where you stopped. US, Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app.
Ask this Book
A Kindle iOS app feature (US, launched December 2025) that answers questions about the ebook you are reading, limited to your place by default.
Text-to-speech (TTS)
Software that reads written text aloud. Speak Screen is the free iPhone version; Speechify is a paid app with more natural voices.
Read-later app
An app that saves articles to read in a clean view later, such as Instapaper. Pocket was one until Mozilla shut it down on 8 July 2025.
Audiobook credit
A monthly token you exchange for one audiobook in a membership. Audible Premium Plus credits expire after 12 months or on cancellation; our Libro.fm card notes you keep credits if you pause or cancel.
DRM-free
A file without copy protection, which you can keep and play in other apps. Libro.fm offers DRM-free audiobook downloads.
Hold queue
The waiting list for a library ebook or audiobook when every copy is out. Libby notifies you when it is your turn.
Body doubling
Doing a task with another person present, in person or on video. See our guide.
DNF
Did not finish. Readers use it for books they stopped on purpose. A dropped book is not always a DNF; sometimes it only needs a recap.
