Guide
What goes in an ADHD reading kit?
What tools help ADHD readers finish books?
Six things, most of them free: a library card and Libby for books and audiobooks, Speak Screen on your phone for listening to text, a visual timer for short reading sprints, earplugs or headphones for noise, a recap that stops at your page for getting back into a dropped book, and a simple log. Buy nothing until the free version has stopped working.

1. Something to read, free
A library card plus Libby gets you ebooks and audiobooks at no cost, with no late fees because loans return themselves. Our Libby guide covers the settings: downloads on Wi-Fi, speed, and the end-of-chapter sleep timer. If you keep hitting hold queues, then compare Libro.fm and Audible.
2. A way to listen to text
Speak Screen is built into iPhone: swipe down with two fingers and it reads the screen aloud. Speak Selection reads only what you highlight. It is the free answer to rereading the same paragraph four times; see how to use Speak Screen. Speechify is the paid upgrade if you listen for hours and hate the built-in voice.
3. A timer you can see
A flip cube timer turned to 15 or 30 minutes makes a reading session a sprint with an end. A sand hourglass works if beeps bother you. Keep the phone out of reach; the phone timer is a returned card here for good reason. More in how to choose a visual timer.
4. Quiet
Loop Quiet earplugs for reading in noisy places; noise-cancelling headphones if you are listening. Our Loop guide explains which model does what.
5. A way back in
The most common way a book dies is not boredom but a gap: two weeks away and you no longer remember who anyone is. A recap that stops exactly at your page fixes that without spoiling what comes next.
If the book is a Kindle ebook and you are in the US, Kindle's Story So Far is free and built in. For print books and audiobooks on iPhone, Magic Bookmark does this for its supported titles: snap the page or enter the last phrase you heard, and you get a recap, a cast list and spoiler-free answers that stop there. The first book is free; after that, $1.40 to $4.99 per book depending on the pack. Our book recap apps shortlist compares both, and who gets Story So Far explains the gaps.
The free fallback is a paper cast list, filled in as you meet characters.
6. A place to write it down
A log does two jobs: it shows you that you are reading, and it tells you where you stopped. The StoryGraph's free tier covers tracking and goals; our card's catch is that tracking is not remembering. Our printable reading log is the paper version, and the series tracker helps with long series.
What it costs
Our reading shelf price index keeps these numbers in one place.
| Piece | Free version | Paid version |
|---|---|---|
| Books and audiobooks | Libby with a library card | Libro.fm $14.99/mo or Audible from $8.99/mo |
| Listening to text | Speak Screen (iPhone) | Speechify Premium $139/yr or $29/mo |
| Timer | Phone across the room (workaround) | Flip cube timer ($) |
| Quiet | Foam earplugs | Loop Quiet ($$) |
| Way back in | Kindle Story So Far (Kindle ebooks, US) or a paper cast list | Magic Bookmark, first book free then $1.40 to $4.99 per book |
| Log | StoryGraph free tier or a printed log | StoryGraph Plus $4.99/mo or $49.99/yr |
Start with one piece
A kit is a list, not a shopping cart. Pick the piece that matches the way books usually die for you: no time, no quiet, no memory of the plot, or no book at all. Fix that one this week. Everything here is a support for reading, not a treatment; see our medical disclaimer.

Questions
- Q. What is the cheapest reading setup for ADHD?
- A. A library card with Libby, Speak Screen on your phone, and a paper log. All free.
- Q. How do I get back into a book I stopped halfway?
- A. Use a recap that stops at your page rather than a summary of the whole book: Kindle's Story So Far for Kindle ebooks, or Magic Bookmark for print and audiobooks on iPhone (supported titles). Then read ten pages with a timer before deciding anything.
- Q. Do I need to buy anything?
- A. No. Start with the free versions. Pay only when a free piece has clearly stopped working for you.
